foreground is wonderfully detailed, but the background is flat... it ruins everything else... the bird is beautiful...

Yeah - the background does take away from the bird - maybe you could crop it right over the bird's head??

I agree about the background and will work on this again as I want to get it right. I think I spent so long working on the bird the background got a little lost in the process.
